Quintessence

MAIA Contemporary, Mexico City

Group Show: From October 11th to December 1st, 2024

"We need acts of restoration, not only for polluted waters and degraded lands but also for our relationship to the world. We need to restore honor to the way we live, so that when we walk through the world we don't have to avert our eyes with shame, so that we can hold our heads up high and receive the respectful acknowledgment of the rest of the earth's beings."

― Robin Wall Kimmerer

Spring Bloom In The Valley of Luck, 2024, Oil, collected earth, chili, mica, wax, creosote oil, interference and raw pigment on linen, 38 x 27 inches

Press Release:

“Alchemy's ultimate goal has been to extract the purest, most fundamental substance in Nature, one that combines the soul (oil), spirit (alcohol), and body (salt) from any living creature into a quintessence. An uncorrupted substance that holds all the characteristics that distinguish any being—animal, mineral, or plant—from others: its color, scent, texture, and distinctive personality, symbolizing the true essence of all living things.

The quintessence also symbolizes the fusion of material and spiritual realities, reflecting the hermetic's belief in the possibility of spiritual transformation through the refinement of the self and the material world and the interconnectedness of all things. By discovering this connection, we would reconcile with Nature in correspondence with our own essential Nature.

Quintessence is a group show that reveals the findings of a group of female and non-binary artists regarding the search for this quintessence. Through painting, sculpture, and photography, they've been inspired by the magic and mystery between humans and Nature, seeking to create art that helps restore our broken connection.”
