"Channeling Luchita: A Community Response to the Life and Work of Luchita Hurtado" will take over the Millicent Rogers Museum from Nov. 8 to Feb. 2 in what promises to be a stirring reflection on the late Venezuelan-born artist’s enduring legacy. Organized in collaboration with the Taos Abstract Artist Collective (TAAC), this exhibition invites 10 New Mexico-based artists to respond to Hurtado’s signature blend of abstraction, mysticism and connection to the natural world. The opening reception on Friday, Nov. 8 from 5:30–7:30 p.m. offers the public a first glimpse into this poignant tribute to an artist whose star ascended late in life but continues to shine bright.
… "Channeling Luchita" dives into these core themes of Hurtado’s work, refracting them through the visions of contemporary New Mexico artists. The featured artists — Audra Elizabeth Knutson, c marquez, Dean Pulver, Josh Tafoya, Lynnette Haozous, Margaret R. Thompson, Maye Torres, Olive Tyrrell, Rick Romancito, and Tse Tsan — bring their own interpretations to Hurtado’s themes of abstraction, nature and the body. Each piece engages with her legacy while offering something wholly unique. The result is an exhibition that doesn’t just reflect Hurtado’s influence but also pushes her ideas forward, creating a rich dialogue between past and present.
